The Top 5 Books for Translators

Having read many books about translators, their journeys into their translation careers and books about the translation industry as a whole, I have come across a wide range of interesting reads. The reason for picking these five books is that they contain fresh content and they do not repeat any content on topics that you may have read elsewhere. Here I have picked my top favourite books about translators and the translation industry.

1) The Entrepreneurial Linguist: The Business-School Approach to Freelance Translation
This book was the first book I read about the translation industry. It is full of useful tips and advice that will help you to build or develop your translation business.

2) The Prosperous Translator
As professional linguists, we struggle to journey through our careers without needing to ask a few questions about certain situations and issues with which we are faced. Seeing as the book was written by two successful translators, you can trust that this information is truthful and reliable. The book is set out in a Q&A style which makes navigating around the book easy and convenient. Some people have been a little intimated by how no-nonsense the authors are when giving answers to reader questions however, I actually like it because it makes it the answer and solution to the particular issue much clearer.

3) Balance Your Words: Stepping in the translation industry
I love this book by Sara Colombo. Unlike the other books listed here, this book tells the story of her route into the industry, her thoughts on certain matters and offers a truthful yet intriguing insight into the true life of a freelance translator.

4) 101 Things a Translator Needs to Know
If you are looking for a book full of bitesize but useful tips then this is the book for you. It is a very easy read and very light-hearted too! Each of the 101 facts are between 100-150 words long, which means that it is easy to read the book in one go or “dip” in and out of it any time you feel.

5) How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator
How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator is all about Corinne McKay’s journey into the translation industry, as well as her top tips on doing so. She covered the basic points that every new translator should know about equipment they need, how to contact potential clients, where to find clients, balancing home and work life, plus lots more.

Hopefully you will enjoy reading these as much as I have!
