Systems of Enquiry and Business Ethics
A system of enquiry is used to evaluate decision-making, problem solving, and behaviour in a business setting. A system of enquiry is basically a series of questions to help determine the ethical nature of actions and decisions made in the workplace (Code of Ethics and a System of Enquiry in a Business Setting, 2009). This system allows managers to determine if situations are handled in an ethical manner by asking questions about the actions taken. In order to ethically evaluate decision-making, problem solving, and behaviour in a business a system of enquiry is a necessary tool that will be beneficial to the entire business.
A system of enquiry based on the code of ethics at the Warwick Valley School District would include several questions pertaining to students and interactions. This system of enquiry must evaluate the decisions of teachers and faculty in regards to how they solve problems and make decisions on school grounds (Code of Conduct, 2009). It must also question the conduct of the students themselves. Since schools are a complex issue the system of enquiry for this code of ethics should be broken down into several categories including code of conduct for students, code of conduct for teachers, and code of conduct on school grounds.
Code of conduct for students includes many aspects of student life such as dress code, rights, responsibilities, and behaviour. Students are expected to act in a certain manner according the codes of ethics put forth by the Warwick Valley School District. A system of enquiry pertaining to students would ask if they have followed the guidelines put forth in the code of ethics. An example of a system of enquiry question might relate to whether a student is dressing in a manner that distracts other students from learning (Code of Conduct, 2009). A way to evaluate this problem would be question whether students were distracted from learning. The ability to learn in a safe and nurturing environment is a value presented by the Warwick School district and it affects both students and teachers.
Teachers are also presented with a code of ethics that they must follow. Teachers are supposed to provide students with a learning environment that promotes success and self confidence. An issue that might need to be evaluated through a system of enquiry is whether a teacher is providing students with a posi6tive learning environment that is accepting of diversity (Code of Conduct, 2009). This ethic can be measured through a system of enquiry that asks whether a teacher has taken the time to discuss diversity. It can also be evaluated by questioning whether the teacher portrays an attitude of acceptance of diversity amongst the students in the classroom. Teachers and students must be evaluated using systems of enquiry in order to maintain a code of ethics, and the behaviour of all members of the school district while on school grounds is also a large part of the Warwick Valley School District’s code of ethics.
Actions taken on the school grounds are guided by a code of ethics as well. Behaviour, problem solving, and decision-making on the school grounds can all be evaluated through a system of enquiry. Any behaviour that is prohibited must be handled in a certain manner. If ethical judgment suggests that the conduct is not harmful to anyone, but it is still prohibited they must inform the person taking this action that it is prohibited. They must also try to persuade them to stop their actions and warn them of the consequences (Code of Conduct, 2009). As part of a system of enquiry dealing with this problem a good question would ask if these stepped were followed. Failure to exhibit these actions would be a failure to meet the ethics regarded by the school district.
